A successful weekend in Enschede

What a weekend! After months of preparation, the time had finally come for Claire and me to show what we can do in the International Student Lied Duo Competition. The hard work paid off, we made it to the finals and we were awarded the “Vereniging Vrienden van het Lied” prize, consisting of two concerts in the second half of 2015.

It felt great to have our music appreciated by an impressive jury and the audience, and to be performing amongst such impressive colleagues.

Back in Dutchieland – New videos

I’m back in the Netherlands for a whole month and I finally found the time to upload the videos of my concert L’Hiver a cessé. I enjoyed the evening immensely after all the hard work that went into organising the concert and rehearsing the repertoire. I’m happy with the result!

I won’t have much time to relax this month though, me and Claire are participating in the International Student Lied Duo Competition in Enschede this weekend. We’re looking forward to performing a grand total of 17 songs, which we’ve been rehearsing for quite some time now.
I will also take part in the reprise of James Whitbourn’s Annelies in Bergen op Zoom on the 3rd of May. The first version sounded great in the beautiful St. Gertrudiskerk, the second time can only be better! Tickets are available here.

Getting ready for the last year…

I can’t believe how quickly my first year in London has come and gone. On the 9th of September, I will fly back to the UK to get ready for my last ever year of studies. It’s a scary idea not to have weekly lessons anymore, 18 years after my first piano lesson, but I intend to make the most of the remaining ones!

Hopefully, I will soon receive the recordings of my MMus recital at Milton Court Concert Hall on the 1st of July this year. When I do, I’ll upload some of it to my website.

Furthermore, as part of the MPerf programme at Guildhall, I will have to play three recitals this academic year. I already have a few ideas for these concerts and I’m really looking forward to them. I’ll keep you posted 🙂

Agenda is up to date!

Now that I have settled in my new home, new city and new school, I have finally had the chance to update my agenda. There are some interesting projects coming up!

First of all, there is a Fauré project organised by pianist Marc Verter. The concert will be staged in a typical late 19th-century French saloon style in which the audience can enjoy Fauré’s songs, poetry of his contemporaries and a selection of his early piano works. As well as accompanying a couple of songs, I will play the first Nocturne in this concert, celebrating one of my favourite composers.
I am also very happy to be performing with my dear friends Trio Carino again in May! On the day before the Dutch national holocaust commemoration, Susanne, Danna and I will take part in a performance of “Annelies” by British composer James Whitbourn. This haunting piece, for soprano, choir, clarinet and piano trio, was based on Anne Frank’s diary. The concert will take place in Bergen op Zoom in the Netherlands.
Back in England, there are two more Guildhall projects culminating in a performance in the school. One about French piano duos and duets, led by Guildhall professor Noriko Agawa, during which I will perform Debussy’s “Six Épigraphes Antiques” together with my fellow Guildhall piano student Pierre Riley. The other is a collaboration between students of the strings, piano and composing departments. Led by renowned musicians Marcus Barcham-Stevens and Roderick Chadwick, the project will result in a concert during which newly composed pieces for piano and strings duo will be performed in the Lecture Recital Room of the Guildhall School.
Finally, although it is still a long way away, the time and date for my MMus final recital have already been set. Unfortunately it will take place quite early in the morning – for musicians’ standards, that is – but nevertheless, I am very much looking forward to playing a 50 minute solo recital in the beautiful concert hall of Milton Court! The program: Beethoven op.109, Liszt Funérailles, and three beautiful Études by Debussy.

Londen/London

In a couple of months I will be moving to London to start my master studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. During my time there, I am available for concerts and piano lessons! Go to my London page to read more.

The day after

Toegang is gratis!
